Mary Hopkin는 영국 웨일즈 출신의 포크 가수이고 스타 발굴 프로그램에서 우승한 것을 계기로 비틀즈의 폴메카트니에 의해 1968년에 데뷔 싱글 'Those Were the Days' 을 발표해서 하루아침에 스타탄생이 되었던 기록을 갖게 한곡으로 Goodbye 와 함께 그녀를 대표하는곡이 되었고 이 노래 발표당시에 Mary Hopkin는 열여덟살 이었는데 노래를 소화시키는 역량이 흡사 중견아티스트의 역량이 되는듯하고 부드럽고 아름다운 미성에 이끌리는 풍미가 있는듯하다.
아마도 여러버전의 같은 리메이크한 노래중에서 제일 취향이 가는 버전이기도 한듯하고..
이 노래는 원래 러시아의 시인 Konstantin Podrevskii 의 시에 Boris Fomin 이 곡을 붙인것인데 이원곡을 다시 편곡해서
Gene Raskin이 만들어진 곡으로 라스킨의 부인이 뉴욕주 예술가 거주지인 그리니치빌리지 등에서 포크송으로 부르던곡을 다듬어서 마지막으로 만들었던 곡이었다.
이 노래는 또한 각국의 언어로 여러가수에 의해 리메이크된곡이 많기로 유명하고 영국의 샌디 쇼버전이 많이 알려져있으나 곡의 호소력면에서는 메리 홉킨스버젼에 비해 미흡한듯하다.
